The sessions after a great b-b-q lunch at PubCon were Universal & Personal Search, Conversion Optimization and Testing, and Intersection of Search & Social Media.
I returned to Salon C for the Search & Social Media session and realized that I really needed to be attending some other topics besides social media (which I did afterwards)
Bill Hartzer opened the session with reminders to create lots of content & polish your on page optimization. My notes are sketchy here, but I wrote “Links – authority – directories”. I think he was saying to get links back to your site to get authority, and get your links listed in directories.
Bill further said to write articles on your own site and be unique. He said to write about industry news and breaking news, to react quickly and post content to your site. You can update later as necessary. He also covered RSS feed promotions and to use them to your advantage.
Recognizing people who link to you, making sure your site SEO is done and adding link bait (content, articles & polls) are more helpful tips from Hartzer.
Jay Berkowitz stepped up next and began with the way people are searching for information via LinkedIn and YouTube. Jay did a great job being engaging and I told him so in a tweet. He said that how-to videos (YouTube) were hot and make sure to use descriptive keywords to describe your videos.
Jay said that in your Twitter tweets, content is king, to educate-entertain-engage and to use keywords. He mentioned search results fromSocial.com and PeoplePond/PRweb (I think for content research).
Next up was Chris Winfield who talked about writing link-worthy content. He said to get your content on Reddit.com and Digg.com. Chris said that bloggers look to these sites for content, then that content moves to mainstream media.
Chris showed an example of Smashing Magazine to see how their links are showing in search (long-tail links).
